What is the current cost per label?

Companies do not typically announce the pricing of tags. But when I talk to end users, they say the cost is based on volume. For a thermal transfer label with a passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) transponder, the cost is around 15 cents apiece at volumes of 1 million or more. If you were buying in very high volumes—say, 50 million—the cost would likely be a bit lower.

Passive high-frequency (HF) tags are a bit more costly than UHF, since an HF tag is more expensive to produce due to the complexity of the loop antenna and the thickness of the metal in that antenna. Passive UHF tags can use printed metallic inks for producing the antenna, but these do not work well with HF tags.
