July 14, 2004—The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) yesterday presented to a U.S. Congress subcommittee their arguments for legislation restricting potential "Orwellian," privacy-invading uses of RFID. Wal-Mart's CIO, Linda Dillman, was also on hand, arguing that not only is RFID technology still too expensive and primitive to deploy in a manner that threatens privacy, corporations would have no desire to do so even if it were possible.
