Is it possible to produce RFID tags that are temperature-activated? In other words, can they be made so that they will only transmit if a specified temperature barrier is reached?

I have not heard of a tag designed to do that. I'm pretty sure it would be possible, though it would require customized chips. But in most cases, it would seem unnecessary.

Why not simply have a tag communicate the current temperature, or issue an alert if that temperature was outside a preset range? Software can be used to alert workers to intervene only when a problem arises.

In general, it is cheaper to customize software than hardware. I guess there could be unusual circumstances in which you would only want a tag to respond to an interrogator when the temperature was outside a particular range, but I can't think of one.
