We have not had the opportunity to report on any libraries in that region. However, according to a recent scientific paper, titled "RFID in the Egyptian Libraries: Case Study," the Library of Cultural Center, in Ras Al Khaimah, United Arab of Emirates (UAE), was the first library in the Middle East to employ RFID, in early 2000, followed by approximately 52 other libraries throughout the UAE.
Saudi Arabia is the largest country adopting RFID in that region, with approximately 62 libraries, followed by facilities in Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Tunisia and Morocco.
The Library of the American University in Cairo was the first Egyptian library to utilize RFID, in 2007, followed by three other libraries: the Library of The Nile University, in Egypt, which deployed an RFID solution to manage and secure its collection in 2010; the Library of the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology, which began applying the technology in 2011; and the Library of Faculty of Archaeology at Cairo University (Main Branch), which used RFID to protect its valuable and rare collections in 2012, following the burning of the Egyptian Scientific Institute on Dec. 17, 2011, during an Egyptian revolution.
Numerous other libraries in Egypt plan to apply RFID in the future as well—especially a number of academic and public libraries.
