Generally speaking, yes, most retailers that have adopted RFID are using passive UHF radio frequency identification systems to manage inventory, though passive high-frequency (HF) technology has been utilized to monitor such products as pharmaceuticals and jewelry. Most readers use R1000, R2000 and R5000 reader chips; the R1000 was originally developed by Intel, and was acquired by Impinj in July 2008 (see Impinj Acquires Intel's UHF RFID Reader Chip Operation). In 2012, NXP Semiconductors introduced a UHF reader chip, the SLRC900, for use in printers, drink dispensers and other devices (see With Its New Reader Chip, NXP Hopes to Expand Market for Tagging Consumables). I would say the vast majority of readers currently on the market employ these chips, though some companies have developed their own reader ICs.
