There are temperature loggers designed to help monitor the shelf life of fresh produce (see RFID Shelf-life Monitoring Helps Resolve Disputes and DOD Considers RFID-based Solutions for Tracking Food's Shelf Life). There are also temperature sensors used in the aerospace industry to monitor the temperature of premade composite material, in pre-impregnated form, which must be kept below 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit) or colder in order to maintain shelf life (see Aerospace Materials Provider Automates Prepreg Temperature-Tracking).
I am unaware of any solutions specifically made for the mining industry, however. My guess is that if shelf life changes based on time and temperature, as with the above examples, then there probably are RFID products that could help automate the process of checking shelf life and changing out products that are about to expire.
