In August 2009, 21 countries began utilizing RFID to track international mail (at the time, the system was scheduled to be expanded to more than 100 member countries of the Universal Postal Union). RFID tags are slipped into thousands of test letters that are sent to measure international delivery times and monitor compliance with the performance standards set by the UPU, a United Nations agency headquartered in Berne, Switzerland, tasked with coordinating mail operations among national postal authorities worldwide (see RFID Mail Tracking Expands to 21 Countries).
RFID is also being used by some postal agencies around the world to track assets. Swiss Post, for examples, tracks some 70,000 containers carrying trays of mail at its facilities in Switzerland (see RFID News Roundup: Swiss Post Begins Tracking Trays of Letters Via RFID). Finland Post has tagged its roll cages (see Finland Post Finds RFID Can Deliver ROI), and China Post tracks mailbags (see China Post Deploys EPC RFID System to Track Mailbags).
