I posted some information about how RFID is being used in mines back in 2013, which you can read here.
As for how the process of identification is done, it depends on the technology. For mines employing an active RFID-based real-time location system, readers are installed throughout the mine. Tags emit a signal every few seconds, containing a unique ID number. That ID is associated with a particular asset, and software calculates the item's location using a variety of methods, such as triangulation or the amount of time it takes for the signal to reach the antenna.
Passive systems require the tag to be in a reader antenna's field to pick up energy from the antenna and reflect back a signal. Readers are set up at various points, such as the mine's entrance, to interrogate tags on items moving into or out of the mine.
