The answer to this question would depend on a few factors. If you are using corrugated cardboard boxes, the boxes will absorb water. You would thus need to use a transponder designed to work near water. Several companies have developed tags that can be embedded in corrugate during manufacturing, though I don't think anyone is currently doing that. If the boxes are made of plastic, then you need not worry about the water issue. In both cases, you will need to find a label that can withstand getting muddy in the field and survive repeated washings.
Your best bet would probably be not a label but a tag designed for harsh environments, such as HID Global's SlimFlex tag. And there are many other plastic-encased tags from Metalcraft, Securitag Assembly Group, The Tag Factory, William Frick & Co., and other companies that would likely work for your needs. The plastic housing would protect the tag and enable it to last as long as the plastic box.
