Ask The ExpertsWhere Can I Learn More About RFID Price and Performance?
RFID Journal Staff asked 5 years ago

I understand that the pricing of RFID technology, particularly tags, has come down a lot in the past five to 10 years, and that performance has improved. Are there any resources that provide an overview of these price and performance changes?

Jeff,

The European EPC Competence Center (EECC) has been testing passive UHF RFID transponders for the past few years and produces reports on the performance of tags (see EECC Study Expands Structure to Test IoT-based RFID Tags). I don't know if the latest report shows changes in performance over time, but certainly if you were to purchase their first and most recent reports, you would see improvements in performance.

Pricing is not something that companies tend to publish, so it would be difficult to provide accurate information about this. From what I have heard from buyers of tags throughout the years, though, the price has dropped from around 25 cents per inlay 10 years ago to about 12 cents five years ago, and it's now approximately 7 cents in large volumes.

I hope this information proves helpful.
