Are Any Retailers Using Data from Smart Fitting Rooms to Improve Demand Forecasting?

Posted By RFID Journal, 03.01.2018

I am a UCL student investigating how try-on data from smart dressing rooms can be used to improve forecasting. I've been trying to find a real-world dataset. Do you have any advice on where I could gain access to such data?

Margarida,

I have not heard any retailers publicly say that they are using data from smart fitting rooms to improve demand forecasting. I think the data alone would not be all that helpful, since an item that is tried on often but not sold would not be one you would want to replenish. I have heard some retailers talk about making changes to garments that are tried on often but not purchased, indicating a problem with cut or fitting.

If the data you are looking for exists, it is probably tightly held by retailers. You might try reaching out to Auburn University's RFID Lab, which has carried out a lot of studies on RFID and might have aggregated data from the retailers with which it works. Perhaps our readers will know of another source for the data you seek; if so, they are invited to post about it below.
