Why Should Schools Use Radio Frequency Identification?
What are the advantages of and selling points for a large school district deploying RFID for tracking IT and general fixed assets?
It would be difficult to say precisely what the benefits would be without knowing more information, such as how often you perform inventory counts. But in general, I would say that RFID would dramatically reduce the amount of time required to take inventory of IT and fixed assets. I would also bet that it would reduce capital expenditures for both types of assets.
The problem that many districts face is a lack of visibility into what assets are owned and where they are located, particularly if a number of schools share assets. When workers can't find a laptop, a server or some other asset, they tend to order new ones. But there is often an asset available. The problem is that the people who know the asset is available aren't the ones who need it, while those who need it don't know it's available.
RFID could also lead to a reduction in asset theft. Generally speaking, when assets are tracked more closely, people tend to be a little less willing to walk off with something. There could be other benefits as well, such as the ability to streamline processes.
