Where Can I Learn About MEMS RFID Technology Related to the Health Industry?

To whom should I speak to find such information?

Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) are very small and can be placed onto a silicon chip or used for other applications. They have been utilized for several decades, in everything from inkjet printers to accelerometers that deploy air bags within cars. I have not heard the term used in conjunction with radio frequency identification for several years, however. In fact, our last story specifically about MEMS was published in 2007 (see MEMS the Word).

There was an Australian startup called MEMS-ID that was employing the technology to create a low-cost RFID tag for tracking surgical instruments (Bluechiip Nears Commercial Launch of System for Biobanking Apps), but it appears that the company is no longer in business. I am unaware of any other firms combining RFID and MEMS technologies, but if any of our readers know differently, they are invited to post information below.

One person you might want to contact is Anatol Krozer, a senior research scientist at the Institute of Micro- and Nanotechnologies, in Göteborg, Sweden. Krozer is an expert on MEMS, and was providing lectures about that subject at the time of our 2007 article.

Mems-ID changed its name to Bluechiip in 2008. We are certainly alive and kicking and going from strength to strength. We are headquartered in Melbourne, Australia but have a clear focus on the US market having appointed Micronic America as our distributor for North America and have a product manager based in Cary, North Carolina. See our company website at www.bluechiip.com. We are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) under the symbol BCT. Please contact myself to discuss your interest in MEMS-based RFID technologies.
