Where Can I Learn About the Strengths and Weaknesses of RFID?
Is there an article or white paper on your site that outlines this topic?
We do not have a white paper or article that discusses this issue, because it is very complex. First, there are more than 25 different types of radio frequency identification technology. Some tags can be read from only a few inches away, while others can be interrogated from a distance of 300 feet or more.
The second issue is that the strengths and weaknesses depend on the particular application. For example, the relatively short range would be a weakness of passive tags if you wanted to locate tools within a large factory, but the short read range of high-frequency (HF) tags based on the ISO 14443 standard would be a strength, since it would prevent others from intercepting the data when the tag was being used for a financial transaction.
We have created a report titled How to Choose the Right RFID System: A Step-By-Step Guide, which can walk you through the process of choosing the proper RFID technology to meet your specific needs. There is also a section that explains the strengths and weaknesses of each type of RFID system, and lists some common applications for each technology. You can learn more about the report by clicking here. Feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions.
