Guide to RFID Labs & Research Centers

January 3, 2008—Organizations that want to learn more about RFID or evaluate how technologies perform in various conditions can take advantage of the dozens of laboratories and demonstration centers that are now operating throughout the world. RFID vendors, industry associations, universities and researchers have created a variety of facilities for RFID testing and research. Many are open to participation by companies or individuals. Here is a list of RFID labs and research centers compiled by RFID Update. We would like to expand and update this list, so please send additional listings to: email@example.com.
EPCglobal RFID Test Centre

IBM RFID Solution Centers
13 worldwide locations
Opened/operated by: IBM
Notes: IBM operates 13 RFID Solution Centers around the world. The most recently announced facility is the 50,000 square foot RFID & Wireless Centre of Excellence in Dublin, Ireland.
RFID Solutions Center Dayton
Opened/operated by: Alien Technology
Size: 23,000 square feet
Opened/operated by: Merck, Technical University of Darmstadt (TU Darmstadt)
Notes: Pharmaceutical company Merck founded announced it was founding and staffing this lab in 2006 to research development of printable RFID chips for use on packaging. Additional information is not available on the Merck or university Web sites.
RFID Technology Center
Opened/operated by: Babush Material Handling Systems and RedPrarie International
Size: 3,200 square feet
SAIT Radio Frequency Applications Development Lab
Opened/operated by: Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and Hewlett-Packard
Notes: HP previously announced it would open the "RFID Noisy Lab" in Omaha, Nebraska for testing RFID in noisy environments, but there is no other reference of the Noisy Lab on the HP Web site.
Sun RFID Test Center
Opened/operated by: Sun Microsystems
Size: 17,000 square feet
