March 4, 2005—Japan, whose RFID applications with respect to people are consistently the most compelling and occasionally off-putting, will see the introduction of a new crime-fighting technology next year in Osaka. Children of Osaka will be given RFID-tagged cards which transmit information only when a button on the card is pressed. A card-carrying child will be instructed to push the button in the event of an emergency, thereby activating cameras in vending machine-like kiosks called "police robots" distributed around the city. The photos will then be transmitted to the authorities' central system, with the hope that the bad guys' faces be captured on film.
