August 16, 2004—Adding to RFID's momentum, three of the most familiar names in technology are moving forward with RFID initiatives. Sun, IBM, and Sybase each have announced their plans to offer "middleware," or software that filters, preprocesses, and routes the mountains of data coming in from an enterprise's RFID readers on its way to being saved and analyzed by the back-office system.
