Ask The ExpertsIs Bureau of Indian Standards Registration Required for RFID Printers and Handheld Readers Imported Into India?
RFID Journal Staff asked 5 years ago

I work at AITechEx QiS, an RFID startup company based in Hyderabad, India. We launched less than a year ago. Prior to that, I was in Europe, where I became interested in RFID-based technologies, which propelled me to become a member of RFID Journal.

I am reaching out to seek your advice on a topic which has been bothering my firm for a week: whether or not the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requires approvals for RFID readers imported into India. We recently became a channel partner of Sky RFID to implement RFID-based projects in this country. As we are in the process of importing RFID readers from Sky RFID, which are already CE-, FCC- and CCC-certified, and there's been a debate about the need for BIS certifications as well. It is quite unfortunate that, although we have clients lined up for RFID projects, we are stuck at the level of getting clarity on the required approvals.

I wonder if it would be possible for you to put us in contact with any existing RFID companies in India, or those exporting RFID products to India, so that we could check with them about whether BIS certifications are mandatory for importing RFID readers into out country. Thanks.

Ram,

I reached out to Great Eastern Idtech Pvt. Ltd. That company's Shakti Jain says a BIS registration is required for RFID printers and handheld readers imported into India.
