Does read range cause problems for passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) systems?

Read range is generally not a problem for passive UHF RFID. In many cases, a bigger issue these days is avoiding extraneous reads. However, I would think that there would be interest in such a device for certain applications, such as using a handheld reader to interrogate tags affixed to goods located on the top shelf of a warehouse rack. Of course, it would be critical that the device not add a lot to the reader’s cost, alter its ergonomics or make it illegal under existing government regulations.
