Are there any formal rankings available?

There are companies that provide formal rankings of passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tag and reader manufacturers by volume, as well as by dollar value of sales. These reports are not made public, since the companies sell them, but I would say that Motorola Solutions—whose enterprise business was recently acquired by Zebra Technologies (see Zebra Buys Motorola Solutions' Enterprise Business)—Impinj, Alien Technology, FEIG Electronics, ThingMagic (a division of Trimble), Applied Wireless Devices, CAEN RFID, GOA RFID and Mojix are among the leading providers of passive UHF readers.

Most chips are manufactured by NXP Semiconductors, Impinj and Alien Technology. These are used in tags provided by a wide variety of companies, but the leaders are Avery Dennison, Smartrac Technology and Invengo.
