Ask The ExpertsCategory: QuestionsWhere Can I Obtain RFID Tags for Tracking Wildlife?
Brian Scheick asked 3 years ago

I recently read a 2009 report about active RFID mounted-on-ear tags used on grizzly and polar bears by Integral RFID in Washington, which looked promising for a wildlife project I am planning, but that company seems to be permanently out of business. Another RFID firm I found online that focuses on industrial uses suggested that I ask RFID Journal. If any member companies make RFID products that are mounted in or on animals, particularly wild animals, I'd like to speak with them about how the technology is being used in this manner. My email address is  brian.scheick@myfwc.com and my phone number is (352) 334-4219. I am located in Florida. Thank you.

If any companies would like to be involved in this project, they are invited to contact Brian directly. I am also including links below to some articles we've written about tracking wild animals with RFID and other Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, in case Brian would like to reach out to any of the organizations discussed.

RFID Goes on Safari
The Dallas Zoo tracks elephants in real time to study their behavior and determine if they're getting enough exercise.

Developers Compete to Help Protect Elephants with IoT
Hackster.io and Smart Parks have launched a competition as the companies build collars that transmit LoRaWAN Internet of Things data about the conditions and locations of wild elephants, to help rangers detect problems and researchers develop long-term solutions.

World Wildlife Fund Uses RFID to Foil Poachers
A real-time tracking and monitoring solution helps protect endangered rhinos and other animals in Namibia.

Startup Provides NB-IoT Reindeer Ear Tag for Real-Time Location
Herders are testing a solution from Anicare that provides location data about the animals as they graze and migrate through the forests of Finland, thereby preventing unnecessary loss of livestock if they wander away from the herd or stop moving.

Solar-Powered RFID Brings Insight to California Woodpeckers
UC Berkeley researchers are using active RFID tags powered by the Sun to capture the social behavior of acorn woodpeckers cohabitating or fighting, and to track efforts to rebuild after wildfire destruction.

WWF Using Simple RFID System in Complex Project
The World Wildlife Fund is employing passive RFID tags to monitor the white-lipped peccary as part of a biodiversity study in the Amazon.

Where Can I Find an RFID Solution to Track Wild Boars?
I need to log their feeding-station visits in a forest, with a distance between the reader and logger of approximately 5 meters. What would you recommend?

RFID Tracks Fish at High Speed in Washington Dam
With LF antennas embedded in concrete at the Lower Granite Dam spillway, a solution developed by Biomark and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration is capturing the unique ID numbers of thousands of salmon and steelhead as they pass over the dam at speeds of up to 47 miles per hour.

Colleges Take Rat Research to Waste Recycling Site With RFID
Researchers from Fordham and Columbia Universities, using an LF RFID solution from UID, were able to take rodent behavior research out of cages and labs to track wild rats in their own environment.

IoT Aims to Track Free-Ranging Reindeer in Finland
Finnish reindeer herders are testing a LoRaWAN-based solution from Digita and Actility on several dozen alpha female reindeer, in order to track herds of thousands of animals and detect when they may be in danger from predators or vehicles.

Semtech LoRa Technology Tracks Endangered Black Rhinos in Africa
The company is deploying a LoRaWAN IoT network to monitor endangered species and improve operations at Tanzania's Mkomazi National Park.

Fishing for Answers in the Deep Blue Sea
The IoT can help us better understand how industrial fishing impacts sharks and other important marine species. But sometimes the technology fails to reel in answers.

Building a Better Mouse (or Raccoon, Skunk, You-Name-It) Trap With IoT
Remote monitoring systems have given pest-control agencies near-real-time visibility into the status of animal traps, reducing fuel and labor costs.
