The NFC Forum, a Near Field Communication (NFC) association, is always a good resource for these kinds of details. Some good links include The Building Blocks of Contactless, Technical Overview, Certification Resources and NFC World. When it comes to a comparison with other technologies, each has its own attributes and applications that are quite distinct, so they can be hard to compare directly. Perusing RFID Journal's articles is a good way to review how each is being used, as well as the benefits and challenges.
