RFID Journal Staff asked 5 years ago I'm conducting research into RFID uses in business-access cards. What are the most commonly used protocols for existing business cards (such as MIFARE, HITAG, EM, etc.)? Is there a specific protocol companies switch to if they replace their old access cards?

I have not seen any statistics on the use of the different types of RFID transponders in access-control systems. I believe MIFARE to be the most common, but that assumption is based more on anecdotal information that on hard data. The industry seems to be moving toward Near Field Communication (NFC), which combines the ISO 14443 HF air-interface protocol and the ISO 15693 HF air-interface protocol with some additional capabilities. The value of NFC is that most smartphones now contain an NFC reader, so companies could potentially eliminate cards and allow people to enter buildings using the NFC tag-emulation capability in their phone. Research firms such as ABI Research and VDC Research might have hard data on the use of different types of RFID for access control.
