I need to log their feeding-station visits in a forest, with a distance between the reader and logger of approximately 5 meters. What would you recommend?

Andreas,
To read tags at that distance, you would need to use passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tags and readers. GOA RFID and a few other companies make passive UHF RFID ear tags for animals. You would need to purchase a passive UHF reader and probably connect it to a solar-powered station that could supply power out in the forest. There are a wide variety of passive UHF readers that would work.
You might want to check out Convergence System's Ltd.'s CS208-3G Intelligent Integrated Reader with GPS. Since it has GPS, you could move it around in the field and always know its location.
I hope this answers your question, and I look forward to seeing you at RFID Journal LIVE! in May.
