Who was awarded the first patent for the technology?

One of the earliest patents was awarded to Mario Cardullo, back in 1970 (see Genesis of the Versatile RFID Tag). However, some say Charles Walton was awarded the first patent. In any case, no one is really considered to have “invented” the idea; many individuals began thinking about the ability to communicate with microchips wirelessly around the early 1970s.
