Ask The ExpertsWhat Types of Reader-Writers Work Best?
RFID Journal Staff asked 11 years ago

I would like to read and write several different kinds of tags. What model of reader-writer should I use?

It depends on the type of tags you plan to read. If you want to interrogate passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags based on the EPC Gen 2 standard, from Avery Dennison, Invengo and NXP Semiconductors, then any EPC Gen 2-compliant reader will work. If you want to read passive high-frequency (HF) tags employing the ISO 15693 and ISO 14443 protocols, there are several multi-protocol HF readers that will work. Texas Instruments, for example, released a multi-protocol reader in 2007 (see TI Releases Tiny Multiprotocol HF RFID Reader Chip), and an Internet search will turn up others. If you need to read HF and UHF tags using a single device, then I'm afraid you are stuck, as no one is currently marketing such a device, to my knowledge. If our readers are aware of such a device, they are invited to post information below.
