Retailers typically employ passive UHF RFID tags operating at 860 to 960 MHZ, depending on their region. The range for writing to or deactivating a tag is shorter than the read range, but it depends on a variety of factors, including the size of the tag used, the reader antenna used and so on. I would estimate about 10 feet as a rough range to write to or deactivate a tag. To kill a tag, you must send a password and then a kill command. This is the way in which all passive UHF RFID tags are set up. Killing a tag means it can never be read again.
