RFID Journal Staff asked 6 years ago I require reading capability at close range, but not too far away. I need readers and tags that would work at a range of 5 to 10 centimeters, but not much more or less. What setup would you recommend?

I would recommend passive Near Field Communication (NFC) tags and readers. NFC is a form of passive high-frequency RFID technology based on the ISO 14443 air-interface protocol standard (which determines how tags and readers communicate). ISO 14443 was designed to have a read range of no more than 10 centimeters because it is used for financial transactions. The latest NFC systems also incorporate the ISO 15693 HF air-interface protocols, so an NFC reader can interrogate tags based on the ISO 15693 protocol from father away. However, you can purchase shorter-range ISO 14443 tags and achieve the limited range you seek.
