Which type of tag works best in the presence of high amounts of liquid?

Tags that operate through inductive coupling are not affected by water. Low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) and near-field ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags all can be read underwater, though not at long range. LF tags are probably your best choice. In 2011, we published an article about the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, which used LF RFID technology to identify fish in its exhibit tanks (see RFID Chips Tell Fish Tales at Aquarium). And in 2008, we discussed how Destron Fearing was awarded $885,000 in contracts for a passive LF RFID antenna to track salmon (see RFID News Roundup: Digital Angel Awarded Contract for 50-foot-long RFID Antenna System).
