It would not be possible to point to one solution and say it is the best RFID inventory- and warehouse-management technology. The right solution to deploy would depend on a variety of factors, including the nature of the items being tracked, the location accuracy required, the warehouse's layout, the data that needs to be collected and so on.
In some cases, an active RFID solution might be the best option. This is usually the case if you are tracking large objects, such as engine blocks, over long distances. Active solutions are also useful when monitoring parts bins, since tag cost is deferred over the life of the bin.
There are passive overhead solutions that work well in some circumstances. In others, you would need to associate rack locations with a passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tag on a part or finished good. There are a lot of different software options available for tracking and managing inventory.
My suggestion would be that you attend RFID Journal LIVE!, to be held in Phoenix, Ariz. on May 9-11, and speak to the solution providers exhibiting there about what you want to achieve. I am sure you will be able to find a solution that meets your needs.
