Infrared (IR) and ultrasonic tags vary in price, depending on volume and the seller. Sonitor Technologies is the primary source for ultrasonic systems. I am told that their tags sell for around $40 to $50 apiece.

Infrared has the limitation of being a line-of-sight technology. The only company I know that sells IR tags is Scirocco, a Swedish firm that added RFID to its portfolio. Most companies combine infrared and RFID to provide more precise location accuracy. Active RFID can tell you where an item is to within about 10 feet to 20 feet, while infrared can tell you within an area of a few feet.

CenTrak, Ekahau, Radianse, RF Code and Versus Technology all offer infrared in conjunction with some form of RFID. The tags are typically in the $50 to $75 range.
