To answer your question, I reached out to Impinj. Here is the answer that a representative from the company provided:
The Impinj xArray gateway can calculate a tag's location based upon the response to the multiple antennas in the product. Impinj ItemSense software tracks that location and can be programmed to both track the history of locations, as well as trigger message events based upon tag movement beyond a programmed distance. Location is generally accurate within 1.5 meters, so movement has to be greater than that to trigger events consistently.
