Can you please suggest a few other technologies that could identify objects?

Devangi,
A variety of technologies can be used to identify objects. Inkode embeds aluminum fibers in paper or labels to uniquely identify different objects (see 1-Cent RFID Tags for Supermarkets), while SOMARK Innovations developed RF-resonant inks that could be tattooed on animals to identify them uniquely (see RFID Tattoos to Make a Mark on Cattle Tagging). There are also alternatives to active RFID systems, including infrared and ultrasound. Every type of system has its own unique strengths and weaknesses for different applications. RFID works in more situations than most of these alternatives, which is why it has caught on much faster than competing technologies.
