What types of applications are enabled by such a combination?

Typically, active RFID tags are combined with GPS to enable a company to locate vehicles or large assets at a distribution or laydown yard to within a distance of 10 feet. When a vehicle or asset leaves an area in which there are active RFID antennas, GPS takes over and users can locate the asset even when it is in the middle of a desert or ocean. I have also seen GPS tags employed for port operations. Readers on cranes identify each shipping container as it is offloaded, and the container can be later located using the GPS tag.
