Are there any issues or disadvantages to using an active RFID reader to monitor students?

I can think of two potential downsides. One is that RFID is sometimes perceived as infringing on students' privacy. Some object to being tracked wherever they go within a school facility. If you do implement an RFID system, I would suggest that you discuss the situation with students and their parents, and explain why you want to deploy the technology and what the benefits are. I would also make clear how the data will be used, how long it will be stored and how it will eventually be deleted.

Another potential downside is the cost involved. Active RFID tags that can be utilized for a real-time location system can be fairly expensive. Passive systems can be used, but performance can be spotty since the human body can act as a shield, preventing tags from being read automatically.
