I do not know of any inexpensive ways to switch from one type of RFID to another, which is why I strongly advocate companies take a strategic long-term approach to RFID. I spell this out, in fact, in a preconference seminar called "RFID Strategies and Best Practices" at our RFID Journal LIVE! conference and exhibition.
The best thing I can suggest is that you take a phased approach, if possible. That is, if you are tracking products, tools, bins and finished goods, you might switch over the tool-tracking application to UHF first, then the bins, then the products and finally the finished goods.
This isn't always possible, of course, because you would like to employ some of the same readers to read all of these items. But sometimes, one system is used in one main area of the facility and can be switched over first. This incremental approach means that the upfront investment can be phased in and you can minimize disruption to operations, while ensuring that the new system works the way it is supposed to before expanding it.
