Ron,

Yes, there are several on the market. U Grok It makes a battery-powered, passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) reader that plugs into the audio port of an iPhone. There are several free U Grok It apps available in the Apple Store.

Zebra Technologies offers the RFD8500 sled (see Zebra's Sled Reader Enables UHF RFID Tag Reads Via Smartphone), which links to an Android or iOS device.

Technology Solutions (UK) Ltd. makes the TSL 1128 Bluetooth UHF RFID Reader, which is similar.

AsReader manufactures a case for the iPhone that has a passive UHF RFID reader built into it, so it's not much larger than the phone itself.

If you are looking for a reader for Near Field Communication (NFC) tags (a form of high-frequency RFID), Serialio makes the idChamp RS2, which connects to iOS devices wirelessly using Bluetooth HID.

All of these companies will be exhibiting at RFID Journal LIVE! 2016, which will take place on May 3-5, in Orlando, Fla.
