Alex,

Many, though not all, new smartphones come with a Near Field Communication (NFC) RFID reader. NFC is a short-range form of radio frequency identification, with a range of just a few inches. The tags can cost anywhere from $0.20 to $2 apiece, depending on whether they are simple labels or keychain fobs made of durable plastic.

Note that Apple's new iPhone models do contain an NFC reader, but you cannot use it to read any tags. It only works with Apple Pay, though that might change in future versions.

There are readers that you can connect to a smartphone to interrogate passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags. That can increase the read range to about 6 to 10 feet, depending on the device.
