Ask The ExpertsIs RFID Outdated?
RFID Journal Staff asked 10 years ago

I have invested in a company called Tranzbyte (ERBB) that uses radio frequency identification. But a friend has told me that RFID is outdated and on the way out. Is this true? If so, what is a better technology? If not, is there a better type of RFID... like an "advanced RFID?"

I think I know your friend. Wasn't he the same guy who told the executives at Decca Records not to sign the Beatles because "guitar groups are on the way out?"

Saying RFID is on the way out is like saying in 1999 that the Internet was on the way out, or that MP3 players in 2001 were on the way out, or that smartphones in 2006 were on the way out. RFID is most definitely not outdated.

As far as a better type of RFID goes, the technology is evolving and improving every day. There are many different types of RFID. Some have very broad applications, some more narrow uses. It is difficult to say which types of RFID will dominate, but I think it is pretty obvious that the technology is still in its infancy, and that it will eventually reach a tipping point and become ubiquitous.

Don't listen to your friend.
