Basically, what I'm asking is this: Is there a way to have many readers in a network that only has one central processor to conserve costs?

RFID readers generally connect to a local area network and feed data into a central server. Typically, servers run the RFID application or middleware that filters the data and forwards it to the appropriate applications. However, most readers have a central processing unit and are able to run applications locally. This enables them to receive commands and execute them, filter data and control output ports. Thus, they can read a tag and, say, open a dock door or control a diverter on a conveyor belt.
