You need to use passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags with a passive UHF reader. Radio antennas must be tuned to the same frequency. Just as you can't listen to an AM radio station with an FM-only radio, you can't read a passive high-frequency (HF) tag via a passive UHF reader. In addition, the tag and reader must employ the same air-interface protocol standard (usually ISO 18000-6C for passive UHF). The air-interface protocol is the "language" that tags and readers use to communicate. If a tag and a reader don't utilize the same protocol, then the tag will receive signals from the reader antenna, but will not know what those signals mean nor be able to respond appropriately.
