Ask The ExpertsHow Often Does an RFID Tag Need to Be Refreshed or Replaced?
RFID Journal Staff asked 7 years ago

Assuming it is worn by a person and is generally indoors, used as part of a real-time location system (RTLS), how frequently would tag replacement be required?

Rob,

If you are using passive RFID tags, they should last for 20 years, as long as the tags are not bent or broken. If you are using active RFID tags as part of the RTLS solution, the batteries will likely have a lifespan of two to five year, depending on how often each tag beacons. The company that makes the tags should be able to give you some insights into how long the batteries will last, depending on the beacon rate chosen. When a battery dies, a tag is typically thrown away and replaced. It is not common to open a tag and install a new battery, but you should probably confirm that with your provider.
