The technology is being used in various ways in different parts of the industry. Apparel stores are deploying RFID to improve inventory accuracy and make sure items are on the shelf when customers want to buy them. This leads to more products being sold at a higher price, as well as enhanced profitability.
Retail manufacturers are using RFID as well. Chinese apparel manufacturer Affirm Heart Far East implemented an RFID solution to identify where materials and finished goods are located, and also when they were delayed, so that it can analyze the cause of that delay (such as identifying particular workstations that were slow) and rectify the issue (see Chinese Apparel Factory Improves Efficiency Via 80,000 Tag Reads Daily).
Esquel, a big manufacturer of shirts and other apparel items, is employing RFID to manage work in process. It tracks both different qualities of cotton and piece parts moving among different sewing stations. And Lemmi Fashion utilizes the technology to receive goods into its warehouse and ensure shipments to customers are 100 percent accurate (see RFID Skeptics Embrace RFID).
The University of Arkansas' RFID Research Center (now located at Auburn University) has identified 60 potential uses cases for RFID in apparel manufacturing and in the supply chain (see University of Arkansas Study Finds 60 Ways to Use RFID in Apparel Supply Chain).
