I am exploring the possibility of creating a people-tracking system that involves using miniature RFID tags and fixed readers to identify a person's exact location. What do I need to know?

Generally speaking, readers pass information about tag reads to middleware, including serial number, time of read, reader ID and antenna ID (if multiple antennas are used). The raw data can be in XML or plain text format. The middleware puts the data into a format that enables it to be stored properly in a database, so it can be accessed by enterprise or cloud-based solutions.

There are a wide variety of middleware products on the market, including open-source middleware, such as ASPIRE and RIFIDI.
