I need to be able to read 10 to 12 objects placed inside the bin. What types of devices do I need for this?

Nate,
For a very small trash can, you might be able to use a passive high-frequency (HF) reader and passive HF tags based on the ISO 15693 air-interface protocol standard. Such tags have a read range of 2 to 3 feet. For a larger can, you would need to use passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) tags and a passive UHF reader. There are readers with a single antenna integrated, which should work, or you could buy a reader module from a company such as ThingMagic and attach an external antenna, perhaps in the trash can's lid.
