Arduino is a low-cost, open-source microcontroller containing a single printed circuit board, designed by students to use an 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontroller or a 32-bit Atmel ARM microcontroller. It began in 2005 as a project for students at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, in Ivrea, Italy. Arduino also has software consisting of a standard programming language compiler and a boot loader that runs the microcontroller. You can purchase pre-assembled boards, or kits that need to be assembled.

Arduino Playground, a site for those who use the Arduino microcontroller for projects, has published code for using an Arduino board with a read-only Parallax brand RFID reader (see playground.arduino.cc/Learning/PRFID). There is also code for using an Arduino board with a read-write version of the Parralax reader (see playground.arduino.cc/Learning/ParallaxRFIDreadwritemodule). In addition, you can view a video tutorial on the same site for utilizing an Arduino board with a 125 kHz RFID reader (see forum.arduino.cc/index.php?topic=128449.0).
