It would depend on the reader being used. Some handheld readers store tag-read data in memory and then, when you cradle the device, the information is uploaded via Wi-Fi to a back-end server. Some passive UHF RFID readers export tag reads in XML format at regular intervals, or when the data is requested by middleware. Active RFID-based real-time location systems send data continuously to the host system so tag locations can be updated automatically.
