You could possibly do it that way, yes. I'm not an engineer, mind you, so any engineers reading this are welcome to chime in. You could use a USB converter, and I have also seen readers that connect to the audio port. The problem is that the iPad's battery would limit how much power you'd be able to draw for the reader, so the read range of any iPad reader would be very short, unless the reader had its own battery power.
