I need the read range to be active at 6 inches, but cannot have it exceed 2 feet. Do you have any thoughts regarding which technologies I can use to achieve this range?

Tom,

Passive high-frequency (HF) RFID transponders based on the ISO 14443 air-interface protocol standard, including Near Field Communication (NFC) tags, have a read range of 2 to 4 inches. If that is too short for your needs, you could go with HF transponders based on the ISO 15693 air-interface protocol. These transponders can be read from 1 to 3 feet away. Since you don't want the tags to be interrogated from a distance of 2 feet or more, you could turn down the energy emitted by the reader.
