Is any research still focusing on low-frequency RFID technology?

There are companies that still use low-frequency (LF) RFID for some applications, including animal identification and industrial automation. LF transponders perform well in water and around metal, which is why these two applications are the most common for LF RFID. However, there are only a few firms left, such as RFID Inc., that actually sell passive LF transponders, and I am unaware of any research being conducted that is focused on LF RFID.
